App Building 1014 min read

How long does it take to build an app? A stage-by-stage answer

How long building an app takes at each stage, from first version to launch and first month, what slows it down, and app store review times.

A first working version of an app can now be ready in minutes with an AI app builder. That is not the same as ready for customers. Most of the time between an idea and a launched app goes into decisions, words, testing and, for phone apps, store reviews.

How long does each stage of building an app take?

StageRough time with an AI app builderWhat decides it
Plan who it is for and what they doAn hour to a dayHow clear the idea already is
First working versionMinutesHow complete the first description is
Ready for real customersDays to a few weeksRounds of changes, content, payments and testing
Launch on the webThe same dayA custom domain, whose DNS can take up to a day or two
Launch in the app storesDays to weeksDeveloper accounts, store listings and review
First month after launchOngoingWhat real users show you

These ranges are our own estimates for a standard app such as a booking site, a store or a members area, not measured averages. Your own decisions move them more than anything else.

Why can an AI app builder make the first version so fast?

Because it writes the pages, the database, sign-in and payments together from one description, instead of a team building and connecting each part. In ExaSpark, a request that says who the app is for, what they do, what is saved and what they pay produces a working app you can click through and publish to a link. How to build an app without coding walks through that first build.

Speed at this stage has a catch. A vague request gets a fast but generic result, and the time comes back later as rounds of changes. Time spent on the plan is time you don't spend undoing guesses.

What actually takes the time?

  • Decisions. What the app does not do, what it costs, what happens when someone cancels. The app waits for these either way.
  • Words and pictures. Headlines, prices, terms and privacy pages, product photos. Nobody else can write what your business promises.
  • Payments going live. Setting up the payment account, testing checkout and refunds in the test environment, then switching to live.
  • Testing with real people. Three to five people using the app without help find problems you won't, and arranging it takes a few days.
  • Outside reviews. App stores, ad platforms and domain changes run on their own schedules.

How long does app store review take?

For iPhone apps, Apple says App Review typically reviews at least 50% of submissions in less than 24 hours and 90% in less than 48 hours, and that incomplete submissions take longer (Apple, October 2026).

Google Play adds a step for new developers. Personal developer accounts created after November 13, 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers who stay opted in for at least 14 days before they can apply for production access, and Google says reviewing that application usually takes seven days or less (Google Play Console Help). Some apps then get extended reviews of up to seven days or longer (Publish your app). For a first Android app on a new personal account, plan for three weeks or more before it is public on Google Play.

A web app skips all of this: it is live when you publish. That is one reason to launch on the web first and add a phone app once people use it; see Web app vs mobile app vs PWA. With ExaSpark the same project can also become an Android app, shared with an install link and a QR code while you test, and prepared as a build for Google Play. See How to turn a website into an Android app and Android apps.

How does building with AI compare with hiring a team?

A developer or agency starts with a scope, an estimate and a schedule, and each change goes back through that process. With an AI app builder the first version and each change take minutes, so the schedule depends mostly on how fast you decide and test. The trade is that you carry the product decisions yourself. For booking sites, stores, portals and members areas, that trade usually favours building it yourself. For unusual integrations or strict regulation, a team's time is still worth paying for.

How can you build an app faster?

  • Write a one-page plan before the first request: who, what they do, what is saved, what they pay.
  • Launch on the web first, and add a phone app once people come back.
  • Prepare the words, prices and photos while the app is being built, not after.
  • Ask for one change per message, and test it before the next.
  • Set a launch date for a small version, and keep a list of what waits until after.

Once the app is ready, App launch checklist covers launch day and the first 30 days. To see how fast your own first version comes together, start with a complete description:

A class booking app for my yoga studio: students sign in with Google, see the week's classes, book a spot and pay $15 per class through Stripe, and teachers see who is booked. Make it work on the web and as an Android app.
